UJP PRAHA a.s. was established in 1996 under the name ŠKODA - ÚJP, Praha, a.s. within the “major privatization” process as the successor of the former Nuclear Fuel Institute (Czech abbreviation ÚJP) which, established in 1966, had been a subsidiary of the state-owned enterprise DIAMO. The name was changed to the present UJP PRAHA in 2002. On the one hand the company business activities build on the wealthy know-how acquired by the Nuclear Fuel Institute during decades, on the other hand the company also ventures into other specialized branches of technology and acquires a renown there as well.
The company premises, on an area of some 5 hectares, lie on the southern outskirts of the capital Prague, in a district whose name is Praha-Zbraslav. With roughly 100 employees, the company has the statute of a nuclear facility. It runs production halls about 5 000 square metres area plus auxiliary operations, such as laboratories.
The wide know-how acquired during the past years in the development of technologies and research into materials finding use in the nuclear power sector is the company’s most valuable asset. Apart from other fields of technology, this know-how encompasses nuclear fuel fabrication, design and manufacture of packagings for the transport and storage of radioactivity, research into materials for the nuclear power sector and other industries, and heavy metal processing. This expertise is finding application in the complete range of products and services offered by the company.
UJP PRAHA is engaged in projects that, owing to their nature and level of achievements, contribute significantly to the development of the Czech industry. This is why some of the projects are supported by governmental grants. Such projects include, among others, the building of a medical instrumentation centre for radiation oncology, building of a centre for residual life assessment and controlled ageing procedures for technological units, and the development of special tungsten-based materials. UJP PRAHA's participation in European materials research programmes can be seen as a wide-reaching appreciation of the company’s achievements.
UJP PRAHA runs various special facilities licensed by the relevant national authorities, such as a facility for work with uranium metal and uranium compounds and a materials research facility. The company and some of its staff are holders of licenses authorizing them to perform special activities, such as inspections of nuclear installations.
With a view to diversifying the range of its activities, the company launched in 1996 the manufacture of equipment for radiotherapy based on know-how acquired from Chirana company. A cobalt irradiator for radiotherapy is the flag-ship among this instrumentation, although other equipment and facilities for this area of medical services are being developed and marketed as well.
The high level of company performance is documented by the integral quality and environmental management system certifikovaný podle norem EN ISO 9001:2000, EN ISO 13 485:2003 a EN ISO 14 001:2004.
