Materials Engineering

A wide area of expert activities aimed at finding the causes of initiation of defects in materials; causes of out-of-specification mechanical and physical properties of mechanical parts and products after a certain period of use; and related causes of failures. Recommendations for improvement.

UJP PRAHA staff members are authorized to perform expert activities based on certificates issued by ITI Praha , Nuclear Power branch.

Specific programmes:
  • Identification of the causes of fractures/cracks in used mechanical parts and products based on microstructure analysis, mechanical properties and fractographical analysis of fracture surfaces
  • Development of forensic expert opinions, also encompassing the nuclear power sector
  • Assessment of the causes of enhanced wear of mechanical parts
  • Assessment of the causes of out-of-specification properties of products, optimization of the choice of the material and its heat treatment
  • Materials certificates, also for the nuclear power sector
Examples of applications:
  • Certificates of material properties of tubes and welded joints Modřanská potrubní, a.s.
  • Identification of the causes of damage (development of cracks) of mechanical parts in operation (expert assessment contracts with various customers)
High-pressure pipeline rupture High-pressure pipeline rupture Example of high-pressure pipeline rupture
Cleavage damage Cleavage damage Sample of fracture surface - cleavage damage
Corrosion cracks in a pipe Corrosion cracks in a pipe Corrosion cracks in a pipe
Intercrystalline cracks Intercrystalline cracks Intercrystalline cracks in nickel (hydroxide manufacturing equipment)
Failed part Failed part Sample of a failed part
